The Simple Quiet Power of Mentorship

My name is Theaira and I am a graduate of Central Hardin High School and Hope Academy for Kids' (HAFK) alumni. I started attending when I was in the sixth grade. My Mom passed away when I was young and my father was incarcerated on drug related charges. I lived with my aunt and uncle during my Middle School and High School years. At first I was angry and apathetic towards my mentors at HAFK. "I just didn't need any more disappointment!" Slowly, the dedicated and loving volunteers gradually chipped away at my lack of trust for others. Fast forward to my senior year of high school, I maintained a 3.78 GPA, in Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and making plans to attend college at Western Kentucky University studying Criminal Justice. As a guest speaker at the Annual Volunteer Orientation, I had the opportunity to share just how impactful the multiple mentors at Hope Academy for Kids were in my life. They took me to church, gave me rides to school, attended my competitions and helped me with my homework. My biggest fan and mentor Ms. Dianna, made multiple trips to Bowling Green to ensure I got settled into my dorm room when I started college!
In May of 2023 I graduated Summa Cum Laude from WKU as a 2nd Lieutenant with a double major in Criminology and Sociology. I am now serving in the United States Army.
